The Complete Guide to Digital Nomad Visa Requirements part III

Congratulations, you got the visa! Now you're a Spanish resident. Enjoy!

But wait, You're a Tax Resident Now: If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain, you're a tax resident. That means your worldwide income is now liable for Spanish taxes, which can be... an adjustment.

☀️ Life in Spain & Long-Term Planning

  • The Famous Beckham Law (Special Tax Regime): This is where you might save some serious dough. The DNV can make you eligible for the special tax regime, which offers a sweet flat tax rate on income up to €600,000. Stop. Read this again: Tax is complex. This regime doesn't apply to everyone. Consult a tax professional before you move. Seriously. They're cheaper than a massive audit.

  • Renewal is Not Automatic: Your first permit is valid for either one year if you applied outside Spain, to three years if you applied within Spain. You can renew it for an additional two. To do so, you need to prove you're still meeting all the original requirements—especially the income and remote work stuff.

  • Long-Term Residency Requires Commitment: If you want to go for long-term residency after five years, you can't be a wanderer. You must not have spent more than 183 days a year outside of Spain during your time on the DNV.

  • Bring the Crew: Good news! You can include dependent family members like your spouse, partner, and children. You just need to show sufficient additional income to support them.

Hello, we're Bea and Paul…

...and we know exactly what it’s like to chase that better life. We spent 13 years working hard in Southern California, but after wrestling with one immigration hurdle after another, we realized that the "American Dream" wasn't quite working out for us. So, we sold everything, packed our bags, and moved to Spain—site unseen!

Our YouTube channel, Everything is Boffo (Life in Spain), tells the whole crazy story, from our first jamón to navigating our own residency here. We share the realities of life in Spain, the slow travel, the good food, and how we make it all happen.
