Now that we've got the financial solvency squared away, there's still a few important requiremtns that you will need to provide before sunny Spain gives you the thumbs up to move.
The Spanish system has a penchant for paperwork. If the instructions say to bring one photocopy, be prepared to bring two. Wet stamps are still expected in official documents. Do not, under any circumstances, try to unstaple that Apostille, etc, etc.

đ Application Hurdles (The Bureaucracy Tango)
Choose Your Path, Wisely: You have two options, and both have pros and cons.
From your home country: Apply for a one-year visa at a Spanish consulate. Once you arrive, you need to get a one-year TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) from the police station.
From within Spain: If you're already here legally (e.g., as a tourist), you can apply directly for a three-year residence permit through the UGE (Large Companies Unit). A friendly tip: Have your paperwork 100% ready before you apply from inside Spain, or you might burn through your tourist days and find yourself in a bureaucratic black hole. If you're already on another residence permit, apply before your TIE card expires.
Health Insurance is Non-Negotiable... Mostly: You generally need comprehensive private health insurance from a Spanish company like Innoinsure, it should have no waiting, no co-payments, nor deductibles. The one big exception: If you're registering as a self-employed professional (autĂłnomo), you'll be paying into the public social security system, so you don't need the private policy. Employees covered by certain social security certificates (like the US CoC) still need that private insurance.
The Clean Slate Rule: You must provide a clean criminal record certificate from everywhere youâve lived for the past two (or sometimes five) years. Get it apostilled and officially translated from a Sworn Translator (Traductor Jurado).
Translation is a Science: All official documents not originally in Spanish must be translated by a sworn translator recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You cannot just use Google Translate for this. If you get rejected, this mistake is often the culprit.
The Visa Card: If you apply from abroad and are approved, the initial document you get is only a one-year visa. The three-year TIE is only for those who go the UGE/in-Spain route first.

Hello, we're Bea and PaulâŠ
...and we know exactly what itâs like to chase that better life. We spent 13 years working hard in Southern California, but after wrestling with one immigration hurdle after another, we realized that the "American Dream" wasn't quite working out for us. So, we sold everything, packed our bags, and moved to Spainâsite unseen!
Our YouTube channel, Everything is Boffo (Life in Spain), tells the whole crazy story, from our first jamĂłn to navigating our own residency here. We share the realities of life in Spain, the slow travel, the good food, and how we make it all happen.
