Let's be honest. The idea of trading in your cubicle for a cozy apartment in Barcelona or a sun-drenched terrace in Seville sounds like something out of a mediocre rom-com. But the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) is very much real, and it’s a brilliant way to legally live your best remote-work life.
However, Spain isn't just handing out residency like free tapas. They want to make sure you're a serious professional who can pay the bills and not be a burden to the Spanish social services. This isn't a visa for extended backpacking. It's for people who know how to work—remotely—and are ready for a proper commitment.
Here is the essential, no-nonsense checklist of what you need to know now from our good friends over at Bureaucracy Spain.

💰 Show Me the Money (and the History)
Spain has a particular idea of "stable." They want proof of a steady income and professional chops.
The Big Income Hurdle: This is the cornerstone. You need to prove a consistent monthly income that is at least 200% of Spain's Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI). The actual number changes, so don't be lazy...check the current rate. And because the government understands you might not be traveling alone, that requirement jumps for every dependent family member you bring along.
Remote is the Only Way: This visa is explicitly for those whose job can be done with a laptop and a decent Wi-Fi connection. You need to prove you don't actually need to be where your company is.
Paperwork Proof of Remote Work: Don't just tell them you work remotely, prove it. You need a contract or, for freelancers, multiple contracts and invoices, along with a nice, explicit letter from your client(s)/employer authorizing you to work from Spain.
Your CV Matters: You need a relevant university degree, an equivalent vocational school qualification, or at least three years of professional experience in your field. This experience needs to be certified via an Apostilled social security document. No, you can't just send them your LinkedIn profile.
The Company Age Check: Whether you’re an employee or self-employed, the company you work for must have been operating for at least one year prior to your application. Plus, you need to show you’ve been working for them for at least three months before you apply.
The Spanish Income Limit: You can work for Spanish clients, but income from these local sources cannot exceed 20% of your total monthly income. Keep your main gig international.

Hello, we're Bea and Paul…
...and we know exactly what it’s like to chase that better life. We spent 13 years working hard in Southern California, but after wrestling with one immigration hurdle after another, we realized that the "American Dream" wasn't quite working out for us. So, we sold everything, packed our bags, and moved to Spain—site unseen!
Our YouTube channel, Everything is Boffo (Life in Spain), tells the whole crazy story, from our first jamón to navigating our own residency here. We share the realities of life in Spain, the slow travel, the good food, and how we make it all happen.
