The "Instagram vs. Reality" of Christmas in Europe
If you search "Christmas in Europe" on TikTok, you see people sipping vin chaud (mulled wine) under twinkling lights, looking perfectly rested.
Here is what they don’t show you:
The $1,400 economy flight from JFK or LAX.
The jet lag that hits you right when the markets open.
The panic of trying to fit France, Germany, and Switzerland into a 7-day vacation because "who knows when we'll be back?"
We used to travel like that. It’s exhausting. It’s expensive. And honestly? It’s not "boffo."
Last December, we did something different. We took my mother-in-law (Paul’s mom!) on a slow, deliberate tour of the Alsace region in France. No rushing, no checking flight prices every hour. Just a short hop over from our home in Spain.
Here is the itinerary that changed how we see winter travel—and why living in Europe is the ultimate travel hack.

The Alsace Route: A Fairytale in Slow Motion
Alsace is unique because it sits on the border of France and Germany. You get French wine with German portions (the dream!).
Stop 1: Strasbourg (The Capital of Christmas)
Most tourists spend 4 hours here. We spent 3 days.
The Vibe: Massive, historic, and grand. The cathedral alone will make your jaw drop.
The "Slow Travel" Secret: Skip the main market at the Cathedral after 6 PM (it’s a mosh pit). Instead, walk to the Petite France district. It’s quieter, the canals are lit up, and you can actually hear yourself think.
Stop 2: Colmar (The Disney Set)
This town is so cute it almost feels fake.
The Highlight: The "Little Venice" canal area.
Paul’s Mom’s Favorite: The covered market (Marché Couvert). It’s warm inside, and you can buy local pretzels and cheeses without freezing your fingers off.
Stop 3: The Hidden Gems (Riquewihr & Kaysersberg)
This is where the "tour bus" crowds struggle, but the slow travelers thrive.
Riquewihr: A medieval walled village that inspired Beauty and the Beast. It feels trapped in time.
Kaysersberg: We loved this one for its authenticity. It felt less commercial, more "locals buying handmade gifts."
The Reality Check: These villages are tiny. If you rush, you see them in 20 minutes. If you slow travel, you sit in a Winstub (wine lounge), order a Tarte Flambée, and watch the snow fall for two hours.

Why This Trip Was Different for Us (The "Resident" Advantage)
Here is the secret nobody tells you about these dream trips: They are 10x better when you live in Europe.
When we visited with Paul’s mom, we didn't have the "scarcity mindset." We didn't feel the pressure to wake up at 6 AM to "maximize value" because we knew we could come back next weekend if we wanted to.
Living in Spain (our home base) gave us:
Cheap Access: Flights from Valencia to nearby airports (like Basel-Mulhouse) are often €30–€50 round trip.
No Visa Stress: We aren't counting our "90 days out of 180" Schengen allowance like tourists have to. We are residents. The clock doesn't tick for us.
The "Slow" Mindset: When you live here, Europe stops being a "bucket list" to conquer and starts being your backyard to enjoy.

How to Make This Your Reality
Most people think moving to Europe is something you do when you're 70 and rich.
They are wrong.
We moved to Spain years ago, and it unlocked the rest of Europe for us. Now, a "Christmas Market Trip" isn't a once-in-a-lifetime $5,000 expense. It’s just... what we do on Tuesday.
If you’re tired of watching these travels on YouTube and want to start living them, you need to understand the paperwork that gets you here. It’s not as hard as you think, but you need the right roadmap.
We’ve put together a Free Spain Starter Kit that breaks down:
The exact visa types (Non-Lucrative, Digital Nomad) that let you live in Spain.
How to get EU residency so you can travel freely across the Schengen zone.
The "Slow Travel" budget breakdown.

(Because the best souvenir you can buy at a Christmas market is the knowledge that you don't have to fly home.)

Hello, we're Bea and Paul…
...and we know exactly what it’s like to chase that better life. We spent 13 years working hard in Southern California, but after wrestling with one immigration hurdle after another, we realized that the "American Dream" wasn't quite working out for us. So, we sold everything, packed our bags, and moved to Spain—site unseen!
Our YouTube channel, Everything is Boffo (Life in Spain), tells the whole crazy story, from our first jamón to navigating our own residency here. We share the realities of life in Spain, the slow travel, the good food, and how we make it all happen.
